Long distance relationships,do they work out?

Im helplessly in love with my best friend. He lives two hours away from me but I manage to see him at least once a month..we're not in a relationship now..but that is because he had trust issues. I know he loves me and I know I love him, but he can't make up his mind. Should I stop trying to persue a relationship? Does distance really matter?
