Why are there so many terrible marriages?

People see marriage as this quick road to happiness with a fairy tale ending and all that good stuff. I mean, just look on what is on television. Many of the shows on television revolve around failed marriages, and many of the characters have been through several divorces. People think that this makes it "normal" or "ok". It isn't until after people get married that they realize how much work it is to have a happy marriage, and with our lazy American society, people just don't want to put in the work, so they get the quick fix to their unhappiness (aka divorce). That's my opinion. Take it for what it's worth :)
